Best of the Blogosphere From the Last Week!! Protein, Police Chiefs, and Women's Supplements! Plus: RECIPE of the Week & Holiday Gift Guides!

Here's a roundup of my blogosphere favorites from this week!:  (click on the links to read the posts yourself!)

1) The Engine 2 Diet (Rip Esselstyn)'s "Daily Beet's" Q & A on High Protein Diets for Athletes with Fitness Expert Lani--this is a fantastic post because it really explains why "protein-loading" athletes to "build muscle" is not only scientifically incorrect but it also is linked to the supplement industries' marketing machine.  I find it absolutely fascinating that the World Health Organization recommended daily dietary intake of protein is only 5%!  Yes, 5%!  I love learning more about this after spending so many years thinking the key to strength is protein intake!

2) The Healthy Librarian's post on Police Chief Patrick Berarducci's Plant-Strong Diet Movement in Medina, Ohio.   LOVE this post--it really made me smile. :-) A police chief with poor health basically followed Dr. Esselstyn's program & after seeing such amazing results, has been pushing the whole town to join him!

3)  The Plant-Based Dietician's profile of the Everyday Happy Herbivore Cookbook--a bunch of preview recipes & an opportunity to win a free book!  Check it out:-)

4) Dr. Andrew Weil's Q&A: Are Supplements Really Harmful to Women?  This is a really interesting post in which Dr. Weil discusses a newly published Archives of Internal Medicine journal article which suggests the possibility of increased death rates in women taking suppplements in the Iowa Women's Health Study.  I am particularly fascinated with his comments about "never taking multivitamins with iron in them" because iron is toxic when it builds up in the body.

5)  Gluten-Free Girl's How to Make Gluten-Free Dough Ornaments!!  Silly one I know but its that holiday time of year & I used to make these (non-gluten-free) with my Mom as a little girl!

6)  Great Holiday Gift Guides from the last few weeks:
-The Engine 2 Diet Daily Beet's Ultimate Plant-Strong Holiday Gift Guide!
-The 100 Days of Real Food's Homemade Holiday Gift Ideas (beyond cookies!)
-The Happy Herbivore's Holiday Gift Guide
-The Healthy Librarian's "Money Well Spent" Review (scroll down to see the products)

Yummiest Looking Recipe This Week (I can't wait to try it!!): The Fat-Free Vegan's Roasted Squash & Red Lentil Spread (I LOVE curry!)

Friday's Best of the Blogosphere From the Last Week!! Breast Cancer, Steve Jobs & Pizza is a Vegetable?? Plus: Recipe of the Week!

Wow there have been some extremely interesting posts on the blogs this week!!

Here's a roundup of my favorites:  (click on the links to read the posts yourself!)
1)  Fighting Breast Cancer with Flaxseeds (From "Disease Proof"--Dr. Barnard's blog) Really interesting piece about breast cancer prevention--very medical but fascinating.
2)  Why Did Steve Jobs Die? (Dr. McDougall's Newsletter) Ok this piece was a bit of a shocker.  Dr. McDougall's premise is that Steve Jobs had cancer since early adulthood and the vegan diet helped delay its onset.  This seems like an incredible leap until you follow through Dr. McDougall's calculations of tumor production intervals and the track of Jobs medical treatments.  What a read!  I'm still pondering on it!
3)  Congress Declares Pizza a VEGETABLE??? (Healthy Girl's Kitchen) Ok, in case you missed it, our legislative representatives actually are actively choosing to reduce the health of our kids in favor of the food lobby! This has been going on for awhile but this latest move is SO unbelievably ridiculous that Saturday Night Live had to get in on the act!  Pizza as a vegetable.  Are you kidding me?  I already knew that they classified "fries" as a vegetable, but pizza?? To be perfectly accurate the debate wasn't about pizza actually--it was about whether the tomato paste that GOES ON pizza can be counted as a vegetable!! To me, that doesn't sound a whole lot better.  Sometimes I wonder.  And so does SNL.  This video that the Healthy Girl posted on her blog is hilarious.
4)  From Dr. Esselstyn's Facebook Page:  Newly released:  Dr. Esselstyn's Heart Disease Reversal Program on VIDEO!!  Just in time for the holidays its a stocking stuffer that can save a life!  His whole program in a four hour video!  Dr. E is amazing.

RECIPES: Soups Galore!!

I'm a big fan of soup--particularly when winter starts to creep ever closer!  Whether you are sitting in the sun out in the Southwest or cuddled by the fire in the Midwest & Northeast, November means that winter is here!

Soup is a simple way to cook in bulk and have tons of yummy leftovers.  I'm VERY big on maximizing the number of meals we get out of everything we cook--cooking in bulk is the most efficient way for me to eat well and work the hours I work!  An extra bonus of soup is that it is an extraordinary money saver--it costs very little to make soup (particularly when you use inexpensive ingredients like squash, potatoes and dried beans) and it lasts forever!
Delicious Homemade Split Pea Soup!!

Hilariously I had quite a grand scheme in mind to post a bunch of beautiful photos of all the soups we made last week but I experienced a small wrinkle:  when I went down to check our fridge, we were completely out of the fresh Butternut Squash Soup & Potato Leek Soup!  The only soup not completely consumed was the split pea soup--the largest batch of soup we made!!  So there you go--in our amazing disappearing kitchen I can treat you all to only a lovely photo of the split pea soup :-)

I'll post more recipe variations of my own in the coming weeks after I've tested them more thoroughly--of note, I'm not a chef!  I'm a doctor!  So when I say "recipes of my own" I really mean my own variations on other people's recipes! But for now, please enjoy some of my favorite blogger's soups:

1.  Dr. Esselstyn's son Rip (a triathlete & firefighter who has his own awesome cookbook:  The Engine 2 Diet) posted a fantastic directory of yummy soup recipes that are his favorites on the web: http://engine2diet.com/the-daily-beet/soup/

2.  Another awesome blogger:  The Fat-free Vegan Kitchen has a fantastic recipe for Pumpkin and Roasted Corn Soup!  If you are short on time you can skip a few steps and use canned pumpkin:   http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/11/pumpkin-and-roasted-corn-soup.html

3.  The Happy Herbivore (beautiful recipes and great nutrition facts) has a wonderful recipe for Red Lentil Curry Soup! I'm never one to pass up a good curry! http://happyherbivore.com/recipe/red-lentil-curry-soup/

Enjoy!!
